Week of April 13th

LOTS OF INFORMATION THIS WEEK! READ ALL THE WAY TO THE END!
Walk for Life is getting closer!  Bottles went home on April 1st.  They are due back at school on May 1st.  If they are full, your child may bring it back so I can empty it and send it back home. Please do not bring bottles back until they are full (unless it is May 1st). We will be giving the money collected to the American Cancer Society.

Like last year we will be have special collection Fridays.  For next week (13th-17th), if your child brings in a dollar they earn one minute of free time for the class on Friday.  They can bring any amount of money they want for this week. If you need to pull a couple dollars out of the bottle for the special collection days, feel free to do so.

MARK YOU CALENDARS!
The PV spring carnival is on May 1st!! We will, once again, be collecting items/money for baskets.  These baskets will be auctioned off at the spring carnival. The 1st Grade theme is FROZEN! (I know...) We will collect anything that you can donate that has to do with the movie Frozen.  Check out those dollar sections at Target and other stores! If you would rather give a monetary donation make checks payable to PLEASANTVIEW PTAC.  A blue information sheet came home with your child on Monday, March 30th.

If you can volunteer to help with the carnival, please contact pvptac@gmail.com.  The PTAC has been instrumental in providing our students with money for field trips, iPads, active boards, social events and many more things!

Note from the teacher's desk:
I am starting to get more emails for change of after school transportation and other information from parents. I need you to know that I am not able to check my email all the time.  I TRY to check it at 7am, 10:45, and 2:15 (this is after students leave). This DOES NOT always happen. If you do send an email about transportation or other information, do not assume I have read it unless I reply to you. It is best to call the office with important information OR send a note with your child. If I happen to be absent the sub will never have access to my email.

HERE IS WHAT WE WILL WORK ON THIS WEEK:

Language arts will include:
  • How are ways to make art the same and different? We will read "The Dot".
  • Compare and contrast
  • The spelling patterns -ed and -ing
  • Long e vowel with ie and y (field, my)

  • Writing an opinion piece
There is a new pink word list in your child's folder (on the 10th).  This is for the last 5 units of reading. Each list is for one week. I will also have the words on the right hand side of the blog each week.

Math will include:
  • Adding double digits
  • The new 10 above method
  • The new 10 below method
  • The building method
There will be a family letter in your child's folder explaining double digit addition.  When all is said and done, I want them to be able to add double digits, not add them with each method. We, as teachers, teach 3 methods because there might be one that is easier for your child. They won't know unless they try.

Read, read, read!  Read the same passage over and over until you can read it smoothly without stopping.

Week of March 9th

As part of the PBIS team (positive behavioral interventions and supports) I will be gone at a training on March 10-11.  I will not have the sub use Dojo for those two days.  I will have limited access to email and no access to tell the sub any after school transportation plans.

There are many students coming to school with no winter clothes because they "left them at home".  We go outside on some of these cold days.  Please make sure your child is prepared so they are warm. They do not stay inside if they forget snowpants and boots.

Pleasantview will be hosting a food drive during the month of March. Please consider donating to those in need. Look for more details soon.

Reading Tip of the Week:
Write, write, write!  Ask your child to help you write out the grocery list, a note to Grandma, or to keep a journal of special things that happen at home. When writing encourage your child to use the letter sound patterns that they are learning at school.

Math class will be looking a little different than it has in the past.  We will be doing mini lessons with small groups of students and expecting the other students to work independently on other planned activities when they are not working directly with the teacher.  This will allow the teacher to tailor mini lessons to the needs of the students.  We are really excited to try this out!
